in and around Wilcot

Wilcot is situated in the wonderful Vale of Pewsey, approximately 1.5 miles west of the ‘village’ of Pewsey. The Vale is the result of an ‘eroded anticline’, a chalk dome with the top having been eroded away, leaving a fertile valley floor with the hills to north and south being of chalk. There are eight White Horses cut into the hillsides along the Vale, mostly created within the last 300 years.

There are many excellent pubs in the area, most of them supplying good quality food. Wilcot’s own pub is The Golden Swan situated as you enter the village from the direction of Pewsey, a quarter of a mile from both the canal and Holy Cross church. You can be assured of a warm welcome, good beer, good food, beer garden and, if you need it, a campsite. Others are the Royal Oak at Wootton Rivers, The French Horn as you drive north out of Pewsey, and The Woodbridge at North Newnton.

Wilcot’s ‘Fayre on the Green’, usually around the beginning of June, is well worth a visit.
Pewsey Carnival is, allegedly, the oldest carnival in Wiltshire, having started in 1898. It takes place over two weeks in September.
Through Pewsey runs the burgeoning River Avon which turns south and enters the sea at Christchurch in Dorset. Just north of

Pewsey and running through the edge of Wilcot is the Kennet and Avon canal, built in 1806. Wildlife abounds along the canal, kingfishers included.

There are many cycleways around Wilcot; and walking, either on footpaths or along the canal is great. Bridleways provide access for horse riders. If you are driving - drive slowly; we don’t have many footpaths around here and you are quite likely to find cyclists, walkers or riders just around the next corner.
